N is For...

This month I'm participating in the A-Z Challenge. (For more information, click here.) My theme is Anger MISmanagement. I'll be posting almost every day in April, skipping only Sundays.

Today's letter is N.
N is for NIMROD.
Another insult, one that's rather loosely defined. So let's go right to the dictionary (Merriam-Webster, if you must know.) and see what they define it as.
“Originally from the Biblical Nimrod, a mighty hunter, it has come to mean socially inadequate.”
There, now. Don't you feel better knowing that?
Thanks for your time.

  1. So, it went from a mighty hunter to socially inadequate? Wow, what a journey. :-)

    1. I was debating to use this word at all, but I'm trying to avoid being predictable.

    2. "Debating whether to use this word" is what I meant to say, of course.

Seen you a lot at Betsy's when you finally put on your silver mask onto your former aninimity. LOL
Interesting about Nimrod. I knew all about the mighty hunter but did not realise about socially anadequate.

    1. That's right! Hopefully based on the original meaning of the name.

  6. Well I can imagine a mighty hunter to be socially inadequate...especially if he hunts humans lol (just go with it!)

  7. I nicknamed a tech at my pharmacy "Nimrod". He was the slowest human being on God's green Earth. He didn't last long.

  9. The descent from mighty hunter to doofus comes from our friends at Warner Brothers, and Bugs Bunny to be specific. Elmer Fudd was that mighty hunter, all dressed up in hunting gear and toting his rifle, off to get that wascally wabbit. And of course Bugs consistently made a fool of him, calling him a Nimrod the whole time. So all us little kids who were Biblically illiterate at the time had no idea that Nimrod was a mighty hunter and so thought Nimrod meant doofus. And thus the change in definition occurred, fueled by pop culture.

  12. Funny how words change. As an adult, I was amazed to find Nimrod in the Bible, and assumed he would. of course, have been an idiot. Imagine my surprise. But he was kind of a jerk of a monarch, so maybe that's how the shift began.
