A Birthday Memory, Just for the Hell of It


This -- well, one like it -- was the main present I got for my 11th birthday, many long years ago. (That was also the only year I got to invite friends over for a real birthday party.) Innit cool?

For some reason, that very same tiger illustration found its way onto a child's wastebasket. I found -- and bought -- one at a flea market a few years ago. As for the drum set, I'm still looking for one of those. An affordable one, that is. Last one I found on eBay had a starting bid of $400!

    That drum set is so cool! Too bad we decided to get rid of so many of our toys. I had a Hogan's heroes lunch box, Gilligan's Island and Happy Days Lunch Box. I also had the Gilligan's Island board game

      Not at drums, but I ended up as a rock'n'roll singer for a few years.

    Bet you made a lot of noise with that. Wow, $400 bucks. Wish I had a whole bunch of old toys to sell.

    Oh all the things we wish we'd saved from back then! I have to say, that face on that drum might have creeped me out when I was a kid, though.

    I wonder why it was a "Tiger Trap Drum Set". Did you bang the drum to attract the tigers and then bang them over the head with one of your drum-sticks?

      Yep. Then I chopped up the tiger and skewered him on the drumsticks. You should try "tiger kebab" sometime.

      One of the coolest toys from my childhood, something called a "Horrorscope," goes for four figures on eBay nowadays!
