Who [Reads] Short Shorts?

1. Equal Time for Mel Gibson?

Mel Gibson has been insulted by a lot of people over the last few years, myself included. And hey, has it really been over ten years since Mel's initial racist ramblings made the news? (Yep, it has been!)

I was reading an article about Liam Neeson the other day, and I learned that although the main role in Schindler's List was eventually played by Neeson, other actors who'd been interested in playing the part were Warren Beatty, Kevin Costner, and... Mel Gibson.

Mel-freakin'-Gibson? This is the dude who said “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” innit?

Well, Mr. G blames his drinking problem for the words that came out of his mouth. And he did offer an apology to the Jewish people at the time, and roughly a year ago, in an interview with Variety, Mel said "Surely if I was really what they say I was, some kind of hater, there’d be evidence of actions somewhere. There never has been.”

In addition, there's this article, from earlier this year, which says that Gibson has been donating money to Holocaust survivors via  the Survivor Mitzvah Project.

So, what do you think? Has he paid his penance, as it were, or should we still consider him a bigoted s**thead whose Hollywood projects should be shunned?

2. Seen on a Sign Outside of a Laundromat

"If a man says he'll fix something, he will. There's no need to remind him about it every six months."

3. Every. Single. Time.

Remember what I said about Twitter not long ago? Well, the following is from a recent article on the Fox News site about Stephen King's little "war" with Donald Trump:

"Donald Trump blocked me on Twitter. I am hereby blocking him from seeing "It" or "Mr. Mercedes." No clowns for you, Donald. Go float yourself," King wrote.
Donald Trump blocked me on Twitter. I am hereby blocking him from seeing IT or MR. MERCEDES. No clowns for you, Donald. Go float yourself.

The film about children facing an evil clown opens in September.

See? I toldja! They repeat the tweet in its entirety, right after quoting it!

4. Trump's North Korea Quote?

Speaking of Trump...

Recently, newspapers in America and all over the world were reporting that President Donald Trump had released a message after North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan, saying "The world has received North Korea’s latest message loud and clear: this regime has signaled its contempt for its neighbors, for all members of the United Nations, and for minimum standards of acceptable international behavior." This was the statement released by the White House, which went on to say that "Threatening and destabilizing actions only increase the North Korean regime’s isolation in the region and among all nations of the world. All options are on the table."

Yeah, well, somebody at the White House wrote and released that message, that's for sure, but that is not the way President Trump speaks. Trump's statements are usually full of redundancies, and devoid of anything suggesting that the man has an extensive vocabulary. And whatever he is in favor of is usually "wonderful" or "terrific."

For example, not long ago, Trump said this about Kim Jong-un: “I respect the fact that I believe he is starting to respect us. I respect that fact very much.”

Trump to Ben Carson about the name "Harvey": "Sounds like such an innocent name, Ben, right? But it's not innocent. It's not innocent."

And talking about the clean-up during and after Harvey, he said “We won’t say congratulations. We don’t wanna congratulate. We’ll congratulate each other when it’s all finished, but you have been terrific.”

*sigh*

5. So, What Are They Saying?

I was in a department store a couple of weeks ago and saw a man wearing a shirt that looked a lot like this:

There's a lot of talk here in the USA lately, debating the issue of whether or not depictions of the Confederate flag or items related to the Confederacy are only supported by racists. I must admit that my sentiments are kind of torn. I absolutely despise racism in all its forms, but on the other hand, I really, really want to believe in the sincerity of those proud Southerners who claim that the rebel flag stands for "heritage, not hatred."

And yet... and yet...

I see someone walking around wearing a shirt like that, or displaying the Confederate flag, and I have to wonder if he or she is a bigot...

Especially when shirts like the one shown above are being worn by someone in my home state of Massachusetts, as the one I saw the other day was.

6.  A New Direction?

A few months ago I said that I was debating ending this blog. Well, I've finally been getting lots of ideas for it, so it definitely won't be discontinued anytime soon.

Having said that, I may be slightly changing my blog's focus. It seems that most -- but certainly not all -- of my current crop of readers are close to my own age (I'll turn sixty-one next November, believe it or not!), plus or minus a handful of years. So in recognition of that fact, I'll probably be gearing more posts toward people in their fifties and sixties. Different things I grew up with and the like. You'll see. It's just a minor transition, the kind of thing I've seen happen to other blogs. (For example, my friend Betsy's blog, My Five Men, used to contain quite a few acrostic poems for her weekly entries to the gone-but-not-forgotten "Theme Thursday" posts. Now it's eight or nine years later, and she showcases a lot of her own photos, reflecting the fact that she's become quite a good photographer.)

7. A Grammar Nazi Tid-Bit

By the way, folks, the word is "intact," not "in tact." One word, got it? Unfortunately, I know of a blog written by a successful pro sitcom writer who does that. He also refers to the '50s as the 50's. Maybe it doesn't matter as much if your audience is hearing your words and not reading them?

Thanks for your time!

  1. Hearing sure does make it easier to ignore the grammar.

God, Trump sounds like such an idiot every time he opens his mouth or writes anything.

Going all old fart at your sea? Hey, maybe you can start pushing Viagra and make a few bucks hahaha

As for Mel, he's kissing arse to pay for his words. Whether he truly is racist or not, who knows. Doesn't make his movies bad though. He can sure turn out a good one. Just like Cruise, he's a nutball, but he can make some good movies.

    1. Don't worry, Pat, this isn't going to turn into a blog about back braces, assisted living, and orthopedic shoes. I'm just going to feel a bit more comfortable relating experiences from my younger days, assuming that the majority of my readers will recall those years. People who are interested in my usual subjects, like comic books, movies, and the like probably won't notice any real difference.

  2. I love it when you have a little bit of everything here.

I hate that tweet thing, too, with the repeating. It's like when you click on "news" articles online that only say the headline over and over again with a couple words changed.

And as for Mr. Mel . . . I do think people can change, but I suppose I'll start paying attention to him and his life when he starts paying attention to mine.

Thank you in advance for not writing about orthopedic shoes.

    1. I've been getting a lot of ideas lately that don't warrant regular-length posts, so I've been doing the "Short Shorts" entries a lot.

Here's something else that bugs me (and I'm reprinting something from my own blog):

Why the hell does Wikipedia write "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" at the beginning of all their topics? If you're too freakin' stupid to know you're on the Wikipedia site, even with that logo of theirs that looks like a three-dimensional, golf-ball-shaped puzzle staring you in the fizz, you probably won't be literate enough to read their "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" statement anyway... not to mention the rest of the flippin' article! And as I once said in one of my old David'Z RantZ posts, "Now, it's one thing if a radio or TV announcer tells you who he or she is... For example, "This is Don Wilson saying..." But going to Wikipedia and being told by Wikipedia that you're reading something from Wiki-freakin'-pedia is like visiting me at my home, and listening to me beginning every single sentence with "This is David, saying..." as I look you in the eye!"

  3. Good heavens! You sure are old. As for Mel, we have plenty of evidence: it comes in the form of words that he's used more than once. The heritage argument regarding the display of the confederate flag is ridiculous. A prominent part of that heritage is slavery. I seldom see a confederate flag in Florida, but I saw them a lot when I lived in Western Maryland. Donald Trump's vocabulary is indeed limited. I hate that 50's thing. If people can't remember where the apostrophe belongs, then they can write out "fifties."

    Love,
Janie, whose home will remain intact in spite of Irma (Seems like an innocent name, but it's not, David. It's not innocent at all.)

    1. Yeah, "Irma" does sound innocent. Maybe they should have picked a different name, like... Ivanka?

  4. Really I dont understand Mel Gibson. I know he is catholic (a little fanatic I think) but if he think is a christian how he can talk about jews ? Jesus was a jew too.
BTW I love Liam Neeson ! one of my favorites ♡♡♡

  5. Mel is a damaged soul and he gives money to the holocaust survivors which is good but not sure if he does this for true reasons or for himself...there is a difference. In the end, time will tell but I do believe a person can see the error of their ways, but still..... Trump is such an idiot and his most recent talk about loving the young people he wants to deport since they were brought to the States when they were little made me immediately think of Mel Brooks in the film History of the World Part 1. Mel plays King Louis the 16th who claims he loves his people and then tells a person to "Pull!" where you see a peasant being hurled into the air so Mel can shoot him. I'm so glad you are not leaving and will look forward to your posts. I am a bad girl when it comes to grammar and have written the '50s like '50's so bad me

    1. I think I'd even prefer it if our country were being run by Louis the 16th the way Mel played him.

  6. I read short shorts. Enjoy them vastly too.

Though I as a policy decision don't comment on current politics. Because it just ends up ruining my day totally even thinking about it (we have our own version of President Trump where I come from, so...)

Just giving away cash that some richie rich can easily spare doesn't wash away past sins, at least not in my book. True repentance is difficult to assess and it is between the wrongdoer and the wronged. Am not qualified to judge. But if we were to boycott films based on the ethics/character of the actors/stars/directors involved, I'm afraid not many would find an audience, and the technicians would starve.

I try to be as error-free as possible, but am flawed in the grammar department :) and many other departments as well...what to do?

I'm glad you're not shutting down the blog (eek! why did you even want to?) and I'll look forward to the short shorts down memory lane.

    Have a great week.

    1. For a long time, I wasn't getting any ideas for blog posts, except when celebrities died, so I debated stopping my blog altogether. I've been more inspired lately, for no apparent reason.

  7. A neighbor down the street from us has a painted wooden Confederate flag mounted in their yard. I haven't gone down in the middle of the night to burn it, but I can't say I haven't thought about at least repainting it for them to something decent. :-)

  8. This is an excellent post. Excellent -- not terrific. You don't want your post to be really, really terrific.

That said, I feel the exact same way about shirt displaying the Confederate flag. Seeing one always makes me wonder if the person wearing it is a frigging racist. How did that happen, right?

    Good to hear from you.
