Dressing It Up ~~ A "Sepia Saturday" Post

My mom is second from the left in the top row.
My Uncle Eddie is last on the right in the front row!

My mom, who was raised by her brother-in-law and older sister (as explained here), was constantly involved in pageants and choral performances. So was mom's older brother Eddie. The following scenes are from some of them, running from the late 1920s to early 1930s, by my estimate.

Here's mom...

My Uncle Eddie is on the far right.

Eddie and my mother, Anita.

Here's mom, slightly older. (I'd say late teens.) She's first on the left in the middle row. Her sister Josie sits third from left in the same row.

And just to show that mom's tendency to dress in costumes made it to the next generation, here are a few photos of Yours Truly over the years.

I actually played a dog in a high school production of "Cheaper by the Dozen."

That's Yours Truly on the far left, as Ebenezer Dorset in "The Ransom of Red Chief." The only good role I ever got in high school!

Dressed as a "greaser" for April 1st, 1974.

While working as I waiter, I dressed as Moses for Halloween!

And here I am in my favorite band -- well, the favorite band I was ever in, that is -- Viper!

Be sure to check out the other Sepia Saturday entries. Personally, I don't think I'll get to most of them until Monday!

And thanks for your time!

  2. Great to see we are not the only crazy family carrying on with dress ups over the generations.
The second one reminds me of when friends would come to the country to visit us and we'd all dress up and sometimes put on plays on the verandah.

  3. What a wonderful selection of photos showing talent down the generations. My favourite you mother in the group of girls in European folk costume - was that in an operetta?

  8. Would have liked to see you as a dog in action. I can't even remember the dog in Cheaper by the dozen.

    1. Technically, the dog was not supposed to have been portrayed by an actor. It was listed as a prop!

  9. The best costumes are never store-bought but ones that you make yourself (or have mom make!)

  13. Great to see you on Sepia Saturday (again). I fine collection. My only acting role was to play a motor car in the school play - an even greater challenge to method acting than your cardboard dog.

  14. I definitely missed out in the dressing up brigade if these splendid pictures are anything to go by. My only stage appearance was at university where my character, not dressed up, was booed off!

    1. Aw, that's a shame. I can see how that might sour you on anything theatrical.

    1. Viper (circa 1979,1980) was a rock'n'roll band that did mostly cover songs from the late 1960s to late 1970s -- mainstream rock, nothing really psychedelic -- and several original songs, some written or co-written by myself.

  18. What fun photos. I can't decide which of your costumes I like the best. It's between the dog and Moses.

  20. You have quite the collection of photos of kids in costume. I enjoyed looking at them. "Ransom of Red Chief" was always a fun story!
