John Lennon: You Learn Something New Every Day (Almost)!

This post originally appeared on my now-deleted blog, You Learn Something New Every Day (Almost)!

The 29th anniversary of John Lennon's assassination is December 8th. Doing some late-night research, I found a detail I'd somehow missed about his tragic shooting by Mark David Chapman.

John Lennon was shot, four times, in the back.

I'd always assumed he was shot in the chest, because of the probably-apocryphal story that before firing, Chapman called out "Mr. Lennon?" which presumably would have made Lennon turn to face him. But apparently, Chapman himself said he never said that.

Well. In the past twenty-four hours, I've written entries for all three of my active blogs. I'm going to bed...

But I'll leave you with Elton John's tribute to his departed friend.

Thanks for your time.

  2. Hi Silver fox,
December 8th, I had forgotten the date. It would be nice to hear of some public tribute being paid to him.
Wasn't it nice of sir elton John to write a tribute to him? I think I heard somewhere that Elton John was trying to adopt a baby. Have you heard or read the some?

  3. @Finds: Welcome! New reader?

No, I hadn't heard about that. I wish him luck, since adoption's such a tricky thing, at least in the USA, but I always wonder when someone that old wants to adopt.

Elton is in a strange position. Musical artists (and other celebrities) which he presumably idolized as a teen became close friends. I wonder how that feels. "I used to dream of getting his autograph; now I get invited to his house for supper."

If you're a Beatles fan, and/or an EJ fan, you might like a recent post about George Harrison on my "The Lair of the Silver Fox" blog, and you may also enjoy a post I wrote on my "retired" blog, "David'Z RantZ." (Scroll down to numbers 5 and 6 on that one!)

    And thanks for commenting.

  4. Silver Fox, major Beatles fan here. I saw them three times...and John up close and wonderful once in Memphis. I could see the rose tint on his glasses. I truly did not know he had been shot in the back. The news was a shocker...end of an era. Thanks for the detail. I love learning details like this too!
Thank you especially for stopping by my most humble little Keeping Room. Please come again. I am going there now to reponse to your recent comments!
    Peace be with you.

  6. "If I Only Had a Brain?" That wasn't a Beatles song too, was it? [thinking] Nope. Nope. I believe it was Jessica Simpson.

  7. Three active blogs would be too much for me. I saw your post on one of your other blogs about George Harrison and I see you are mentioning John Lennon here so I figure you like music. I agree with your keeping word verification.

  8. I wonder what's up with Mark David Chapman--Is he still alive? Does he regret what he did...does he realize what he did? So senseless.

All the best to you, SF! I'm trying to catch up on all of your writings. A Herculean Task.

  9. Chapman, 54, is still in prison, serving twenty years to life. He has been denied parole five times, and is eligible once again in August of 2010. He has said that the murder of John Lennon was wrong, and he regrets what Yoko Ono has gone through because of his acts.
