Artist Jack Davis has left us at the age of 91.
To call Jack Davis a "comic book artist" would be belittling his other illustrations over the last 60+ years. You may not recognize the name, but I guarantee you've seen his art before... in MAD Magazine, TIME, TV Guide, etc., etc., etc.!

Back in the mid-1970s, I was at my very first job (at a grocery store) and noticed Jack's art on the cover of the latest TV Guide. I told a co-worker that I recognized the artist's work, and the kid flat-out refused to believe me. The nerve.
Here's just a few examples of Davis' work!
Thanks for your time.
I know his work well! I first encountered it from Mad magazine and then TV guide. I love the Bonanza cover. I didn't know he did It's a Mad, mad, Mad, Mad World but I should have. Even though he lived a long life, it's always sad when a great passes away
ReplyDeleteSame with me! I knew him first from MAD, then TV Guide, then...
DeleteI'm sure I've seen a bunch. But out of all those ones I have seen 2 for sure.
ReplyDeleteYep, his artwork was everywhere. There are a few clones out there, too, unfortunately.
DeleteDid he do CRACKED as well as MAD? I am very familiar with his art. I used to read those mags back in the day. ha. there are a bunch here that I had never seen though outside of that context.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he ever worked for CRACKED, though it is possible. I know another MAD artist, Don Martin, did work for CRACKED.
DeleteThe guy had talent.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'll say it again ;)
DeleteHave a great wekend.

DeleteYou're right, I've never heard of him... but what a talented artist.
